I left home on a plane, to travel to Colorado, to continue my year long rites of passage and ritual work, particularly to set forth on a Vision Quest. In many cultures, this initiation process was done at an early age, when boys became men.
As I extracted myself from my complex plate spinning modern life, I sat on the plane reflecting on the many people that were cheering me on. Some wished that I would find what I’m seeking, and others wished for a medicine that they have not yet found.
My guides suggested that I let things stew, and avoid making meaning out of everything.
A lot happened out there in the 3600 acres of open land.
Four days, four nights, alone in the wilderness.
My mind would wander toward thinking about dinner and what I need to do to prepare for it. Nothing, I’m not eating.
No calendar invites. No notifications. No one asking anything from me.
My body started to purge, shaking, trembling, and withdrawals from the constant dopamine hits of modern life.
Then it switched.
I went from human doing to human being, rolling in the dirt, basking in the sun, and listening to the trees.
When I returned home, I did not analyze it. I spent some time with my somatic experiencing therapist, sharing the medicine I brought back, not with words, but with pure presence.
Part way through, she asked if we should record the words coming out so we don’t lose it. I said no. Be present. Let the transmission be rathering than try to intellectualize it and package it.
One human other than me now has it.
For now, I’ll let this all land deeply.
Initiating to Earth
Typically, initiation happens and we return back to the culture. If the culture is toxic, then perhaps it’s time to let the compost be the process, set down the desire to grasp, hold, and control - surrender to something greater.
